John Monyak, 93, of West Mifflin, formerly of Duquesne, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at Southwestern Assisted Living. He was born June 7, 1922, in Homestead, a son of the late Steve Monyak and Anna (Janosko) Monyak Palchick. He was retired from U.S. Steel, Homestead Works, with 44 years of service as a switchman for their railroad. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church. He proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II and turned 22 on an LST during the D-Day Crusade. He was a gentle man with a keen sense of humor. He was generous and caring and often donated to many charities and would drop everything to run and help his family. He was an avid pinochle player and fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams. His favorite saying was "You win some, and you lose some," and it spoke of his resiliency. John approached the challenges of aging with quiet dignity. He was an example of a life well lived to his children, all the way to the end of his life. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather; and siblings, Steve Monyak, Helen Simko, Jean Morgan, George Palchick and Joseph Palchick. He was the loving husband of 61 years to the late Mildred (Turlik) Monyak; father of Kenneth (Kathy) Monyak, of Abingdon, Va., Christine (Robert) Carothers, of Jefferson Hills, and Diane (Chuck Cooper) Vater, of Burgettstown; grandfather of Kenneth (Bonnie) Monyak, Kimberly (Curtis) Shew, Brian (Kelly) Carothers, Jeffrey (Kathleen) Carothers, Jayme Carothers and 11 great-grandchildren; and brother of Agnes Kane, of West Mifflin, and Mary Ann Grossett, of Monroeville. 
Visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at MALOY-SCHLEIFER FUNERAL HOME INC., 915 Kennedy Ave., Duquesne, 412-466-3300, William B. Schleifer, supervisor, William Brian Schleifer, funeral director. Blessing service will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, in the funeral home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, Duquesne, with the Rev. Thomas Lewandowski. Burial with military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Mifflin.
