Rev. Thomas J. Flaherty

The Rev. Thomas J. Flaherty, of Duquesne, died Sunday, April 10, 2016, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 10, 1940, in McKeesport, he was a son of the late John F. and Ruth K. (Griffin) Flaherty. He was also predeceased by his brother, John T. "Jackie" Flaherty. Tom was ordained to the priesthood in 1966. He served as a parochial vicar at St. Agnes Parish, North Huntingdon. Pursuing directions as authorized by the Second Vatican Council, Tom returned to academic studies at Temple University, concentrating on a doctorate degree in religious studies. For 23 years, Tom was affiliated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and the Department of Health. Words fail to convey the brilliant, imaginative, caring force, stilled by illness, leaving great pain, only somewhat diminished by memory. Survivors include his sisters and brothers, Mary Frances Flaherty, of Duquesne, Joseph Martin "Marty" Flaherty, of Duquesne, Anne Marie Flaherty-Brooks, of Richmond, Va., and Duquesne, Ruth Ann Flaherty, of New York, N.Y., and Patrick (Barbara) Flaherty, of Ligonier. Visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at MALOY-SCHLEIFER FUNERAL HOME INC., 915 Kennedy Ave., Duquesne, 412-466-3300, William B. Schleifer, supervisor, William Brian Schleifer, funeral director. Blessing service at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in the funeral home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Name Church, Christ the Light of the World Parish, Duquesne, with the Rev. Thomas Lewandowski as celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery, West Mifflin.
